Banff is situated in Alberta, about 1.5 hours from Calgary at an elevation of 1383m (4,537 feet). At this elevation it is the highest town in the Canadian Rockies.
The name "Banff" (pronounced "bamph") derived from the Scottish county of Banffshire, birthplace of two of the original Canadian Pacific Railway directors. This friendly town is situated in Banff National Park, Canada's first national park and the third oldest in the world.
Banff National Park developed around the warm mineral springs at Banff, and was created to preserve the natural beauty and wildlife. There is a good chance you will see wildlife strolling around on your visit here, most likely the Elk.
The air is so pure and refreshing here it revitalises you with every breath. The glaciers that once covered the Canadian Rockies have left behind gorges, canyons, rock formations and magnificent jade green lakes which freeze over in the winter across the whole of the National Park.
Surrounded by this majestic scenery, you have more than 100 places to choose from in Banff to eat. From lively bars with live entertainment to quieter, mellow bars with drink specials, Banff has something here for everyone.
Banff offers the best range of accommodation including the spectacular Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel which officially opened on 1st June 1888 and was completed in 1928.
